At the height of his prophesying, Hosea is told to take a wife of harlotry and then she would bear children. The word of the Lord came to Hosea, and explained that his ministry to Israel would present a clear picture to her of God’s assessment of her conduct. In His advice to Israel, his family was not the most grandiose for a display of how God saw them in the conduct of worldliness, but it was vivid.
The children were instructed to be called by names conducive to their own attitudes. All the while, Hosea, whose name means “God is help” or another meaning is “Salvation”, was hammering home the message that had come to him. Israel would be punished in due time, but while she was living like a prodigal, she
would constantly be reminded, “You are not My people,” there would be said to them, “You are the sons of the living God.”
People judge us by our conduct and said to say, they viciously throw around accusations that may have justified conclusions.
When she has deeply imbedded her activity as an adulterous woman, and cannot find satisfaction, and even seeks out those who no longer seek her trade, (to no avail) she says “I will go back to my first husband. For it was better for me than now.”
Remembering that this is a figurative presentation, you can hear the words that traverse her brain. “For she does not know that it was I who gave her the grain, the new wine and the oil, and lavished on her silver and gold which they used for Baal. Therefore, I will take back my grain at harvest time and My new wine in its season. I will also take away My wool and My flax given to cover her nakedness. And then I will uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and no one will rescue her out of my hand. I will also put an end to all her gaiety, He feasts, her new moons, her Sabbaths and all her festal assemblies. I will destroy her vines and fig trees, of which she said, ‘These are my wages which my lovers have given me.’ I will make them a forest, and the beasts of the field will devour them. I will punish her for days of the Baals. And direct their desire toward their iniquity. And it will be like people, like priest; so I will punish them for their ways and repay them for their deeds. They will eat, but not have enough. They will play the harlot, but not increase, because they have stopped giving heed to the Lord.”
As I said earlier, the picture has more content in the verses that follow. Hopefully, you will take time to view the remaining portion in your Bible. (Hosea 3 +)
