The calendar declared it; it was my birthday. I have had a few of those over the years, and like the rest of you, every 365 or 366 days another appears. I am not pushing for an abundance more of them, nor am I hoping not to see another. I just choose to let the Lord handle the counting of the hairs on my head and the numbering of my days. (Matthew 10:30) I live with the anticipation that one-day He is going to call: “Ted!” I am going to answer: “Coming!” I will hear Him say: “No, you are here!”
I recently jotted it down this way:
My friends are quick to greet me,
On this my special day
Whether they are envious, or sorrowful,
Who am I to say?
I know I’m closer Home than I have
Ever been before,
While some of them are closer to
Heaven’s welcomed door.
They had their fun at razzing,
And some have shared concern,
I’ll let them in on a secret —
I’m just ONE-DAY CLOSER HOME!
I am not an alarmist, but I know that we are 2,000 years closer to that moment when Jesus said He would return. I live each day with the realization that it could be my last and if it is not, I await the moment when it will take place.
In light of these birthdays that we celebrate, I remind you that first of all you should be ready for death. It can strike momentarily or in the distant future, but it is an appointment that all must keep. (Hebrews 9:27) In the interim, KEEP LOOKING UP, for when the outlook is bleak, the UP-LOOK works.
A reminder: “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24 NIV)
