GENARATION TO GENERATION

One of the greatest entrustments that one will encounter, yet we see sadly lacking for multiplied reasons, the greatest being the failure to communicate Biblical truths to our children.  Reading the fourth verse of Psalm 145 should make us rethink our obligations and their fulfillment.

The Psalmist impresses upon our thinking when he says: “Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable”. (v3) He follows this with the instruction to the next generation in verse 4, and tells us to declare Your mighty acts.

We have all been confronted with the busyness of our family in various phases of their growing to maturity, and our maturing with them.  At times we feel frustrated, and at times we are jubilant.  Trying to balance our thinking with theirs is a challenge to both of us.  Accordingly, the Psalmist gives us a tip when he says “Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable.” (v3)  I must adapt to what God says in His WORD, and applying it graciously.  Parents are not appointed “dictators”.  They will quickly discover our weaknesses just as we theirs.  We are to focus on the greatness of God.

The content of this Psalm is loaded with suggestions.  The greatness of God is unsearchable (v3);  declaration of His mighty acts (v4); the splendor of His majesty, and His works, along with His acts (v6); His greatness as well His abundant kindness (v6,7);  His righteousness (v7); His gracious and merciful, slow to anger and great in loving kindness (v8); He is good, His mercies over all His works (v9); all godly shall bless God (v10);  His glory and Kingdom that will last forever (v13);  He raises up all who are bowed down (v14); and I continue to quote of what we might pass on to our generation…

“The eyes of all look to YOU, and You give them their food in due time.  You open your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.  The Lord is righteous in all His ways and kind in all His deeds.  The Lord is near to all who call upon Him; to all who call upon Him in truth.  He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He will also hear their cry and will save them.  The Lord keeps all who love Him, but all the wicked He will destroy.  My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and all flesh will bless His holy name forever and ever.”  (Psalm 145)
