It was never my privilege to hear the great preacher Dr. F.B.Meyer, however, I have been honored to have a number of his books in my library. In fact, when we were married, our dear friend Dan Bartkow gave us a little book on marriage that was authored by Dr. Meyer.
One quote from Dr. Meyer became extremely helpful as I launched out into my Christian life. You see, I was repetitious in asking God for forgiveness over my sin, not understanding much about that word forgiveness. One thought that came to my heart was when I was aware of two specific thoughts, one being a quote from Dr. Meyer. “God cannot forgive a sin twice!” The other came from Scripture in reference to a future for Israel: “I will put My law within them and on their heart; I will write it: and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. They shall not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord, for they shall all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,’ declares the Lord, ‘for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more’.”(Jeremiah 31:18)
If you followed those thoughts, as they caught my attention, God forgives in totality when sin has been confessed. He alone does what a man cannot do, “He remembers NO MORE!” To repeatedly ask forgiveness for something already forgiven is in effect denying the efficacy of the blood of Jesus.
Once more from Dr. Meyer: “God cannot forgive a sin twice!”
