MY SHEEP HEAR MY VOICE

Another of those thoughts that I captured in my study of the Scriptures!  Sheep have two marks: “In the ears” – “they hear my voice” (v4), “in the feet” – “they follow ME” (v5) …taken from John chapter 10.

In the process of reading a commentary on John 10, I had been given a thought concerning the Shepherd and his sheep.  As they return to the sheep-fold for the night, the shepherd identifies them by calling them by name and then tenderly strokes each sheep.  It becomes a custom, but it is also creates that personal association where the sheep and shepherd identifies their relationship.  In the event a sheep is missing, the shepherd acquires help while he retraces his steps of the day to ascertain what and where his lost sheep is to be found.

In relating this discourse Jesus first identifies Himself as the “door”.  He does this to make the listeners aware that there are not “many” ways into the “sheepfold”, there is only one way; and as the “shepherd”, one only enters through HIM!  He is the door.  As they pass through the exit or entrance, they receive personal identification, because HE knows them by name.

Again we are reminded that as He leads them, they follow.  They “know His voice!”  HIS sheep are readily identified as over against the thief or robber, because of their identification to HIS voice.  I recall that my grandmother would get mixed up on her grand-children’s names, (27 of us) but, my blind grand-father batted a thousand.

“He goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow HIM because they know his voice.” (v4)  It should not take long for one to identify with his shepherd.  Study of the Scriptures, contextually, and listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit (John 14) and you will learn how to identify a “thief or robber”!

While speaking to these Pharisees, (v16) we catch another enjoyable note that is very personal to the Gentiles: “Other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd.”

When you have heard the voice of Jesus through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, respond!   Follow Him!
