We live in perilous times! How often I hear that or its equivalent! It originated in Eden, following the “fall” of Adam and Eve, and has continued to this day. Most people, with whom we communicate, are quick to equate our current “crisis” as though it was something new. There is an element of truth at their conclusion because God is still in control and either brings into existence an event that creates in our minds that it is “new”, or some others conclude that “History repeats itself”.
Get this picture for a moment! “When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem”. (John 9:51) and following. The focus here is not on His death, but on His ascension! Thus we continue reading and discover that even after three plus years of ministering to His disciples, they become defensive and through their approach to the situation, they immediately want to “command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” He was travelling toward Jerusalem!
How often we allow ourselves to become confused by what God is doing and want to take the situation into our own hands. I doubt that the political and moral moment has seemed worse at any juncture of our lives, although we are prone to believe that to be the case.
While they become engaged in the defense of Him, who needed no defense, they lost sight of “the days of His ascension were approaching”. In our current crisis, we lose sight of the ultimate and focus on the human aspect of things. Obviously, they had no clarity on what they had heard for three plus years and did not remember the step of “the cross”, the resurrection from the grave, or His ascension to the “right hand of the Father”.
If there was ever a time when we needed to focus on the total program of God and that of Jesus Christ, it is NOW!
The words of the Savior bear repeating at this moment in History: “You do not know what kind of spirit you are of; for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” Let us look beyond Calvary and focus on the ultimate, “He is risen—He has ascended – He is seated at the right hand of the Father – He is interceding on our behalf—He is coming again. All that we need to do is in FAITH, trust Him and His finished work at Calvary. There is nothing transpiring that is beyond His control!
