Over the years I have thanked the Lord for the men who taught me the importance of a “plumb line”. Its importance was tested with frequency, especially when involved on construction sites. Those roof rafters, or studs, had to be exact, or problems galore would show themselves as the job progressed.
In thinking about life in general, it does not take a genius to realize that childhood is the time to develop a proper attitude toward character. A child that is brought up slipshod is going to lead to many regrets. There are exceptions to this rule, but I speak of the majority. There are so many positives, as well as negatives, that come from outside sources, of which we are unaware, that it is hard to pin down the origins. Many times we fail to realize that some of the things that we practiced were influencing children, and given freedom, they show up in their life direction.
There has been a gradual erosion of what was once a solid adherence to the principles that originated from the Holy Scriptures. Some will endeavor to deny that, obviously with the general decay of those principles, our society is in a corrupted condition. While we won World War 2, we have gradually declined in so many areas as a stable society.
Marriages have deteriorated. The home life has become anything but stable for the average child. Some of the things taught in our schools cut across simple common decency. Babies are aborted… murdered. Teens are shooting teens. Our politicians have given the appearance that corruption is the accepted mode.
Am I surprised? No! Why? Because God in His Word, through the Lord Jesus and subsequently his apostles and disciples, warned us that time would come. We were warned about this decay being progressive until He has had sufficient, and will bring judgment on this old world.
When reading Romans chapter 1, and the picture of a society like ours reaching its zenith, He will bring judgment upon it. He did it previously… “Professing to be wise, they became fools.” Idolatry became rampant. “Women and men exchanged their natural functions. God gave them over to a depraved mind.” Further we read: “filled with unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, un-trustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.”
None of us bat a thousand, but with God’s help we confess, receive His forgiveness, and by His help forsake further action or actions of that sin or other sins.
Hold up the plumb line of God’s Word; it will expose our sin, but most gloriously it will show us the path of forgiveness through Jesus Christ.
