Anyone can probably recognize that as a nation, we are divided! Yet, we continue to follow a course of ultimate destruction with no obvious intent to “mend our ways!” Unless we apply the brakes, like other nations that have preceded us, we will experience a catastrophe that is unequaled in History! Reading the account of Jesus casting out a demon, (Luke 11:14-26) is like re-reading yesterday’s newspapers or “exploring” the internet.
Jesus is “casting out a demon” and “everyone gets on board” with their opinions. Some are excited; some accuse Him of doing it with the power of “Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons”. Another wants to test Him, “demanding of Him a sign from heaven”.
Because Jesus knew their thoughts He said to them: “Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and a house divided against itself falls”. He rebukes them of their accusation being so radical as to destroy itself. There are guards in his house, but a stronger man can come and overtake that one. Ultimately, the unclean spirit returns with seven other spirits and “the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.”
Continuing to read the entire content of the story, the direct reference is to Israel. Contextually analyzed it is a warning to them of their ultimate rejection of Him and its cost to them.
For us, the same principle applies. Either we deal with the corruption that has besieged us; or we pay the price. There is light and there is darkness. The light of the world is Jesus… He goes on to say: “Then watch out that the light in you is not darkness.” Each day is currently more corrupt than the day before! Never forget that morals cannot be purchased. I can hear John the baptizer heralding out the message that needs repeating today: “MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT. EVERY RAVINE WILL BE FILLED, AND EVERY MOUNTAIN AND HILL WILL BE BROUGHT LOW; THE CROOKED WILL BE MADE STRAIGHT, AND THE ROUGH ROADS SMOOTH; AND ALL FLESH WILL SEE THE SALVATION OF God.’”(V4-6 of Luke 3) He did not stop with that quote from Isaiah the prophet; He continued to speak to the crowds that wanted to be baptized by him: “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits in keeping with repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, “We have Abraham for our father,” for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham. Indeed the axe is already laid to the root of the trees…” (To verse 9)
I have to believe we are approaching a moment of severe judgment and should expect destruction, even to that within our own families. Then comes the ultimatum: “But if I cast out demons by the finger of God, then the Kingdom of God has come upon you. “ (v20) The King came and was rejected, but what shall we do now? Repent of our sin, acknowledge Him as our Savior, and serve Him until He calls us home.
