Over the years I have been tempted, like so many others, (you included) to quit that in which I was engaged. I have heard the oft repeated phrase from the old devil, Satan or his associates, “Is it worth it?”
Two things usually are dumped in my lap for consideration. The first is a poem to whom I cannot give credit because I have never been able to solidify the author.
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you are trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh
When the devil is getting you down a bit,
Rest if you must—but never quit.
Life is queer, with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometime learns,
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won if he’d stuck it out;
Stick to your task, though the pace seems slow –
You may succeed with one more blow.
Success is failure turned inside out –
The silver lining of the clouds of doubt –
And you never can tell how near you are,
It may be close when it seems afar;
So trust God’s Word when you’re hardest hit –
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.
The second came when I was reading the Book of Ephesians, Chapter 6, in J.B. Phillips translation, “Letters to Young Churches”, right after its publication in 1952.
“We are up against the unseen power that controls this dark world, and spiritual agents from the very headquarters of evil. Therefore you must wear the whole armour of God that you may be able to resist evil in its day of power, and that EVEN WHEN YOU HAVE FOUGHT TO A STANDSTILL YOU MAY STILL STAND YOUR GROUND. Take your stand with Truth as your belt, Righteousness your breastplate, the Gospel of Peace firmly on your feet, Salvation as your helmet and in your hand the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God. Above all be sure you take Faith as your shield, for it can quench every burning missile the enemy hurls at you.”
My friends: Take heart! When you have fought to a standstill, KEEP FIGHTING!
