I think often of how much evil possibilities boils in the hearts of men and gradually materializes into action. We understand the reason behind it when we read: “The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9) If for one moment we are akin to believing that man is not moving with greater intensity toward corruption we are fooling ourselves and living in a world of our own make-believe. Read or listen to the news each morning, for there you will find confirmation of what we read in the early chapters of Romans.
One of our problems is that we want so much to believe that with all of our “learning”, things are improving. However the righteousness, which we see in God is a revealer of the sinfulness of man or the unrighteousness of man. The contrast is so evident that the description given in Romans 1:20 is that even a consideration of that which has been made leaves no excuse.
Corruption abounds in the form of men made gods and the impurities of men and women using their bodies in dishonorable fashions totally unnatural to normal functions for which they pay a price, “the penalty of their error”. (Romans 1:27) When the “depraved mind” is allowed to have its way, there is nothing less than “unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil, envy, strive, deceit, malice, gossip, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, and unmerciful .” (V28-31)
All of these things are abhorrent to a RIGHTEOUS GOD! What is said next is what needs specific attention because it not only calls attention to these activities, but indicates specifically: “not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.” In our modern era we have coined phrases that say in effect that we do not want to lower ourselves to their level; we do not want to enforce the quality of life that our forefathers established; descriptions abound and we begin to establish “a new morality”. How sickening that we should consider ourselves above the ALMIGHTY!
