Has it ever occurred to you that someday you may receive a letter from a deceased individual?  Well, when that happened to me about thirty five years ago, initially I was shocked, but then I began to give it a lot thought.

My first thought was, “I am certain that there are few pastors who have ever received such a meaningful experience.”  We go through life enjoying the privilege of ministering to people under all types of situations; never expecting anything in return.  I am certain that far more would express their appreciation in advance if they knew for certain when the Lord was calling them home.

The second thought was, “of all the people I have known, the one to write me such a letter was the wife of a pastor friend.  She could not thank me enough for the close friendship that her husband and I shared.  In reality, he was the teacher and I the student.  However, she felt that I had been an encouragement to him in difficult situations.

Third in my thinking was how much she appreciated the position I held on interpretation of Scriptural truths.  She made it ever so clear how we agreed on some Bible teachers that we both held in great esteem.

In particular, I thought much about the fact that she felt the need to prepare this in advance, and have someone mail it on the day that the Lord called her HOME!

Many of the congregants to whom we have ministered over the years have expressed their appreciation for innumerable reasons, but to have it arrive purposely, immediately after she responded to God’s call to come home, stirred my heart afresh!

Behind my thinking about this dear saint of God was something that the Apostle Peter wrote about in 2 Peter 1.  He was determined to stir up the believers, assured of that necessity because he knew “that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.”

Let’s face it; we all need to have our reminders activated on occasion.  Can I think of a more poignant manner than a letter from a departed friend or relative?  I don’t think so!  We are granted a copy of The Word of God, all 66 Books of the Bible, inspired by the Holy Spirit and protected in their unique fashion through the centuries, so that we may read and respond positively to this letter from HIM!
