As I watched a portion of the State of the Union address, like many of you, I was appalled at the action taken by the Speaker of the House in shredding that speech. It was not what was in the speech; it was arrogance toward our governing system. While I understand the objections each party has toward the goals within the various parties, there is a time and a place toward implementing those goals. This was not the time or place! To invite someone as our president to share their view and then to besmirch them publicly was disgraceful.
This led me back to what I had envisioned when the invitation was extended. We all knew the possibilities and the timing. Weather there was an impeachment or not, it would be an awkward experience for all involved, politicians or the general public.
I have thought about some of the Biblical encounters which turned into fiascos because of a hardened heart. The account of David and Bathsheba would be illustrative. He saw her taking a bath and immediately lusted. Discovering that she was a married woman, he had her husband placed in the front lines of a battle, hoping for his death, and that would justify his having Bathsheba for his wife. (Entire story: 2 Samuel 11, 12) You do not play tootsie with God! What a story this entails!
The action toward Paul as he preached in Asia was repulsive. He had to be rescued via a basket; he was stoned and left for dead at another encounter; flogged with 40 lashings at an additional location. (2 Corinthians 1 & 2) Nothing swayed him from his commitment to honor Jesus Christ.
Bitterness is terrible! It becomes a corruption of an individual and knows no limits. I could address other situations from Holy Writ; this is sufficient!
Folks, let’s get back to Biblical principles and not be so vindictive with those who disagree with us. Luke 6:35 is a strong admonishment… “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.”
For now, let’s hug them to death! It is Heaven’s measure!
