After driving one hundred twenty miles to Wikieup, Arizona, we were anticipating getting out of our car, stretching the limbs and greeting old and new friends. All of that was interrupted as we turned off the highway and started up graveled Chicken Springs Road.
The Wikieup Bible Church is located on the side of a hill overlooking the little town of Wikieup. Approximately five miles before one enters the town, you can spot the little church sitting all alone. It has remained a beacon in that town for many years. Interestingly enough, it is not always appreciated or endorsed by many of the townspeople. There are spurts when it seems to advance and, suddenly, some circumstance in the community, unrelated to the church, will cause the church to be blamed and people disappear for a period of time.
This morning as we climbed the road to the church, we noticed that there were numerous buzzards and vultures flying around the area. There was no noticeable smell of decomposing animals or such, yet they were moving from side to side of the road. It seemed a little out of place.
On my left I noticed a “church” that has been there for years. In reality, it is a cultic group. The people that attend there are well thought of in the community. They are good citizens. However, the teaching of that group does not follow the dictates of Scripture and, try as I might to consider them Christian, nothing would allow such an inclusion. I found myself thinking: We have different kinds of vultures on every hand today.
Sad to say, many professing Christians cannot discern the buzzards or vultures that are attacking them daily. They want to include everyone in the family of God, whether they have repented of their sin and embraced Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior or not. Paul had much to say to Timothy about such persons. Second Timothy 3 would be a good starting point, although the entire Epistle is filled with stern warnings.
Someone noted that these buzzards are a little ahead of schedule this year. The Scripture warns us that, as the waning days of history approaches, the devil and his cohorts will increase their efforts to steal the Scriptures from the hearts of the saints.
Paul warned the Ephesian believers: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:10-12 NASB)
Just like the folk at Wikieup, we too need to be aware of the Buzzards and their intention.
