THINGS I KNOW

God is LIGHT – 1 John 1:5

This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.

God is LOVE – 1 John 4:8

He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

God is LIFE – 1 John 5:20

And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

My cousin was intent on discovering some items for “History” so she could fill in her Family Tree. I had learned long ago that I should just forget about it, but she insisted and went to one who would surely know the information she needed. With her first question came this answer: “Child! Do you know who your momma is?” “Yes!” “Do you know who your daddy is?” “Yes!” “That is all you need to know.”

All of us would like to “know” some things for certain, especially those that relate to our relationship to God and our future; and we can. God’s Word, the Holy Bible, is given by inspiration of God; “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16, 17 NASB) It is authoritative! Examined in detail it passes the tests of genuineness.

Therefore, let us pick some of the gems of truth that are contained in John’s first Epistle. Two things are most noticeable. The word, KNOW, or its associated words appear at least 40 times. The word, LOVE, and its associated words appear at least 52 times.

Three other words tie together marvelous truths: God is LIGHT! (1:5) God is LOVE! (4:8) God is LIFE! (5:20) It is not presumption to conclude that the very character of God is contained in these verses.

The author, John, the man who was so close to Jesus that he even leaned on His breast, said in 1:l-3 “What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life—and the life was manifested, and we have seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us—what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.”(NASB)

The result of these verses is that I can be confident of what God has said, what Jesus has done, what the testimony of the twelve confirmed, (and hundreds later) what I, and anyone who trusts Him as Savior is guaranteed… I Know!!!
