BY INVITATION

“On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, ‘They have no wine.'”

John 2:1-3

John writes about this invitation to Mary, Jesus, and His disciples. He does so “On the third day”. (John 2:1cf) One cannot help but notice a number of things that took place on this occasion.

First, it took place “on the third day”. After the disclosure of Christ by John the Baptist, his cousin, and possibly a playmate in the early years of their lives, John observes a sensational activity of the Holy Spirit which amounted to 30 years in the making… Jesus was God incarnate. Recall if you will that it was the third day after His death that Jesus was resurrected and identified again by His disciples. (John 20)

At that wedding, “they ran out of wine”. Again, at the beginning and the end of His ministry, wine is brought to the forefront. As He shared in “breaking of bread” with His disciples He said, (John 13) that it was the “dipping of the morsel (bread) in the cup,” (wine) that would betray Him.

Mary, His mother, obviously had enough understanding of God’s promise to her concerning Jesus, that as the wine could be replaced by Jesus it would be an opportune time to display who He was. His reply, “My hour has not yet come!” was indicative of something that was 3 plus years down the road. The symbol of the vine, the wine, was not about to take place. Mary comprehended what the angel had said before His birth… Her timing was off.

Second, about those water pots. They were normally used for the “custom of purification’. However, now it was a revelation that purification would only be secured by the shed blood. God would accept no other sacrifice than that of His beloved SON, in His own way and in His own time.

“This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory and His disciples believed in Him.” (v11) Blood; at the beginning and end of Jesus earthly ministry… the only procurement of your salvation.
